The organization of general elections in 2023, in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), is one of the priorities of the mandate of the new government, said Prime Minister Jean-Michel Sama Lukonde during the presentation of his program to the National Assembly.
In recent weeks, certain voices within the political formation of President Félix Tshisekedi seem to condition the organization of the elections by the census of the population; thus evoking the possibility of postponing the ballot in view of the time remaining before the new electoral meeting.
The head of government reassured that in addition to the census, the ballot will indeed take place “within the constitutional deadlines”.
On Saturday April 24, President Félix Tshisekedi also confirmed the holding of elections in 2023, as well as the population census, in front of national deputies who are members of the Sacred Union of the Nation and members of the new government.
He also promised a transparent, free and credible election. As for the census, he explained that this initiative is motivated by the need to “know who is Congolese and who is not”. “But that will not prevent the holding of elections,” he said.
Basically, the program of the new government team, known as the Sacred Union of the Nation, comprises fifteen pillars and 340 actions, affecting four sectors, in particular the pacification of the east of the country, the reconstruction of the country, the State law and social. It was approved by 410 deputies out of the 412 present at the plenary.
Sama Lukonde, 43, and his government were invested by the National Assembly after the presentation of the program. It took more than two months, after the appointment of this new prime minister, for a government to be established and take office. This team will only have two and a half years to prove itself, before the new elections.
