The leader of the Transitional Military Council (CMT) in Chad, Mahamat Idriss Deby, appointed by decree this Sunday, May 2 a transitional government, made up of 40 ministers and secretaries of state.

The government of Albert Pahimi Padacké, the Prime Minister appointed last week, will, among other things, have to organize elections after the transition which will last 18 months.

Several ministers from the government in office until the death of President Idriss Déby are part of the new team, some of them being re-appointed as heads of the same ministries.

The opposition also occupies some positions. Two members of the main opposition party, the National Union for Democracy and Renewal (UNDR), are appointed Minister of Livestock and Deputy Secretary General of the Government, respectively.

UNDR leader Saleh Kebzabo has presumably agreed to this participation in government. “We recognize the Transitional Military Council, otherwise we will not be in government,” he said.

Another opponent, Mahamat Ahmat Alhabo, of the Party for Freedoms and Development (PLD), will be in charge of the Ministry of Justice.

Lydie Beassemda, who was minister under Idriss Déby, is appointed head of the Ministry of Higher Education and Research. This woman is the first to embark on the presidential race. Candidate in the election last April, she was able to collect 3.16% of the vote.

The CMT created a new ministry, that of National Reconciliation and Dialogue. It will be led by Acheick Ibn Oumar, a former rebel leader who in 2019 became diplomatic adviser to the presidency.

On Sunday, the ruling junta also announced the lifting of the curfew that had been imposed just after the announcement of President Déby’s death a dozen days ago.

“After evaluation of the measures initially taken by the Transitional Military Council (CMT) on the whole of the national territory and of the security situation (…), the curfew established on April 20, 2021 is lifted” Sunday, indicates an official decree .

According to several observers, Mahamat Idriss Deby, son of the late president, concentrates practically all the powers. He had suspended the Constitution and dissolved the General Assembly.
