Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni, 76, was sworn in on Wednesday, May 12, for a sixth term at the helm of his country, after 35 years already in power.

He won the presidential election last January with more than 58.6% of the vote, against 34.8 for his main opponent Bobi Wine.

Several heads of state, from the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Burundi, Guinea, Somalia, Namibia and even Ghana, made the trip to honor the inauguration ceremony with their presence.

The ceremony took place at Independence Park in central Kampala, a location carefully chosen to respect barrier measures related to Covid-19. In total, some 4000 guests were present. All security measures were taken to avoid clashes, police officials said.

In his speech, the head of state invited, among other things, to work. “The elections are over, we must now return to work, in the four sectors which bring who recruit and which bring prosperity, which are commercial agriculture, industry, services and new technologies,” he said. he declares.

“With your savings, or by borrowing, or with government support, you should take over one or more of these areas,” the president continued in front of the crowd.

Bobi Wine, who continues to demand the presidential victory, reportedly refused to take part in the inauguration of Museveni. In a tweet, he said his house is surrounded by police and armed forces.

The governance of the Ugandan leader is often criticized by human rights defenders. Opponents are not free to speak out. In order to remain in power for a long time, Museveni has amended the country’s Constitution on two occasions.
