Reconciliation between Morocco and Spain is beginning to translate into action. Morocco opened, on Tuesday April 12, its maritime links, for foot passengers and by coach, with Spain, according to a press release from the Ministry of Transport published on Monday.
“The maritime companies will gradually resume their passenger services between the Moroccan ports of Tanger Med and Tanger-Ville and the Spanish ports of Algeciras and Tarifa”, specifies the text. The resumption of motorist traffic is on the other hand scheduled for the April 18 next.
The press release also informs that the medium and long-haul shipping lines serving the ports of Tangier Med and Nador have gradually resumed, from Monday, April 11, their activities to the Spanish, French and Italian ports.
The Moroccan-Spanish reconciliation was favored by Madrid’s reversal on the question of the Moroccan Sahara by supporting the Moroccan autonomy plan for this vast desert territory located in the south of Morocco, to the great displeasure of the Polisario Front and its support, the ‘Algeria. This change in Spain’s position put an end to a diplomatic estrangement that lasted about a year.
At the invitation of King Mohammed VI, the Spanish Prime Minister, Pedro Sanchez, paid a visit to Rabat last week, during which the two parties decided to “inaugurate an unprecedented stage” in their partnership.
