Fight against drought: Canada flies to the aid of the Horn of Africa with an envelope of $73 million

Canadian diplomacy announced on Tuesday more than $73 million in funding for three countries in the Horn of Africa facing drought, following a high-level roundtable jointly organized by the European Union (EU) and the United Nations on the drought in this region of the world.

“Due to the severe drought in Ethiopia, Kenya and Somalia, more than 20 million people could need emergency food assistance in the region in 2022, which would represent a 70% increase compared to to the severe drought of 2016 and 2017”, underlines the press release published by the Canadian Ministry of Foreign Affairs on its electronic site.

“Extremely concerned” by this situation, as well as by “its repercussions on vulnerable populations who are already struggling against poverty, insecurity and the COVID 19 pandemic”, Canada announced this financial assistance which will be paid to well-known partners. defined, “to meet the immediate and long-term needs” of the States concerned.

These partners, including United Nations agencies, the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement and non-governmental organizations, are already working in these three countries in the fight against hunger and acute malnutrition.
