Following the information that circulated Monday on the candidacy of the former Nigerian head of state, Goodluck Jonathan, in the presidential election of 2023 under the banner of the ruling party, his spokesperson, Ikechukwu Eze, specified this Tuesday, May 10 that such an approach has not been initiated.
“We have learned that a group allegedly purchased Presidential Nomination and Expression of Interest forms from the APC, on behalf of former President Goodluck E. Jonathan. We would like to categorically state that he was unaware of this move and did not authorize it,” the spokesperson said in a statement.
He clarified that “if the former president wanted to stand for election, he would make his intentions known to the public and not enter through a back door.” Likewise, Ikechukwu Eze pointed out that “purchasing a presidential aspiration form in the name of President Jonathan without his consent, knowing the position he held in this country, is considered an insult to his person” .
Goodluck Jonathan’s bid for a second term was brought by a support group that wanted the former leader to run in the ruling party’s primaries, All Progressives Congress (APC). However, the former president, of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), was beaten in the 2015 presidential election by the APC candidate, Muhammadu Buhari, who is nearing the end of his second term.
The presidential candidates of February 2023 have until June 3 to submit their files to the Electoral Commission. Within the APC, tensions are high with the approach of the primaries which should take place during this month of May. Four candidates are in the running, including the current vice-president Yemi Osinbajo.
