A former Deputy Speaker of the Nigerian Senate, Ike Ekweremadu, and his wife, Nwanneka Ekweremadu, have been arrested in the UK on charges of conspiring to bring a child from Nigeria to the country for organ harvesting. British media reported.
The British police have announced that they have arrested them because they are suspected of having organized or facilitated the travel of another person for the purpose of their exploitation, namely the removal of organs.
The charges follow an investigation by a team of specialists from the Metropolitan Police in London, following an alert last May of potential breaches of modern slavery laws.
The man, a well-known People’s Democratic Party politician, 60, and his wife, an academic and doctor in Abuja, 55, are in police custody and are due to appear in Uxbridge Magistrate’s Court on Thursday.
The child suspected of having been the subject of organ trafficking, aged under 18, is taken into the care of the police.
