Niger received, on Sunday June 26 in Diffa (south-east), a donation of several war materials from the African Union, as part of the fight against insecurity in the Sahel.

The Nigerien presidency mentioned “a large batch of war materials” from the African Union which “aims to assist Niger in its fight against insecurity”.

The lot is made up of armored vehicles with on-board weapons, a high-capacity generator, means of transmission and offices for the benefit of the Multinational Joint Force (FMM, armed force composed of contingents from 5 neighboring countries).

Nigerien President Mohamed Bazoum paid a visit to Diffa last weekend to inquire about a repatriation operation for displaced populations from 45 villages in the commune of Geskerou, launched last year. These massive displacements are due to attacks by the terrorist group Boko Haram.

“We are going to bring back the 45 villages (…) and it will be up to you in particular to secure them (…) We are going to strengthen your capacities, the weapons are available and will be made available to you”, he declared, Sunday, in front of the region’s defense and security forces.

“I am happy to know that if we assess the situation this year, and compare it to previous years, we clearly note that it has improved,” continued the president.

According to him, there would be “much fewer losses than usual” among the populations or the soldiers, and “much more losses in the ranks” of the enemy.

The Diffa region, bordering northern Nigeria, often faces attacks from Boko Haram. Since February 2015, the government has declared a state of emergency there, which is regularly renewed.
