Spain started on Tuesday, June 28, the delivery of liquefied natural gas (LNG) to Morocco through the Maghreb-Europe gas pipeline (GME), in accordance with a bilateral agreement signed a few months ago.
This is natural gas that Rabat bought on international markets and that Spain processed before transferring it to Moroccan territory.
“Based on trade relations and good neighborliness, yesterday (Tuesday) saw the first shipment by the Maghreb gas pipeline of LNG previously acquired by Morocco on international markets and landed in a Spanish regasification plant,” they said. sources within the Spanish Ministry of Ecological Transition, quoted by the local press.
These same sources have indicated that “a certification process guarantees that this gas is not of Algerian origin”. As a reminder, Algeria insists that its gas no longer tread Moroccan soil since it put an end, last October, to the use of the Maghreb-Europe gas pipeline which transported its gas to Spain via Morocco. .
This decision by the Algerian authorities was taken unilaterally in a context of strong diplomatic tensions between Algiers and Rabat, which relations have not calmed down so far.
But Madrid and Rabat will now use this GME in the opposite direction, from Spain to Morocco. The two capitals, which had been cold for almost a year, came together last March, against the backdrop of Madrid’s open support for the Moroccan autonomy plan for the Sahara.
