A project to create an anti-coup force could soon see the light of day in the West African sub-region which recorded several coups between 2019 and early 2022, this is what Umaro Mokhtar Sissoco suggested. Embaló, current President of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) and Head of State of Guinea Bissau.

“There is already on the table of ECOWAS a project to create an anti-coup force that we are thinking of creating,” he said at a press conference. which he held jointly with the French President, Emmanuel Macron, visiting Bissau, the last stage of his African tour.

The organization believes that it is “inadmissible and unacceptable to carry out coups” in the 21st century. Currently, she is in talks with the military juntas in power in Mali, Guinea Conakry and Burkina Faso to agree on the transition times for a return to constitutional order. “It’s very important that we end with the transition” in these three countries, insisted Embaló.

In his remarks, the current president of ECOWAS drew attention to the fact “there are procedures to be head of state. We all have to be Republicans. It is the people who have the right to sanction the leaders, but not with military coups”.

Emmanuel Macron, who visited Guinea Bissau against the background of the security situation in the Sahel, welcomed this project of an anti-coup force. For him, it is “an extremely effective instrument to fight against the destabilization that we have seen weakening in the region where military groups have sometimes exploited the weakening of the state to seize power”.

In the process, he reiterated France’s desire to continue to play “its role in the region in the service of legitimate sovereign states”.
