Côte d’Ivoire announced on Thursday (July 27th) a new discovery of oil and natural gas by the Italian hydrocarbon company Eni, in block CI-802 of the country’s offshore sedimentary basin.

In a press release, the Ministry of Mines, Petroleum and Energy indicated that this discovery “increases by about 25% the reserves” announced last year. Last September, Abidjan announced a “major discovery” of a deposit by Eni and its Ivorian partner Petroci Holding.

Called “Baleine”, this deposit would have a potential of 2 billion barrels of crude oil and 2.400 billion cubic feet of natural gas, according to the authorities.

With the new discovery, reserves at 2.5 billion barrels of crude oil and 3.3 trillion cubic feet of natural gas. “This new discovery, which confirms the extension of the whale deposit in block CI-802, increases the initially announced reserves of said deposit by approximately 25%, which thus increase from 2 to 2.5 billion barrels of crude oil and from 2,400 to 3.3 trillion cubic feet of natural gas,” the statement said.

Côte d’Ivoire aims to become a major oil producer from 2023, knowing that the production of the Baleine field should begin in the first half of the year in question. Currently, the country produces around 30,000 barrels per day.
