South Sudan most violent country for aid workers

On the occasion of World Humanitarian Day, which will be celebrated on August 19, the UN published, on Friday, a new toll of humanitarian workers killed around the world since the beginning of this year, placing Sudan from the South at the head of the most violent countries for these humanitarian workers.

“The most violent countries for aid workers remain South Sudan, followed by Afghanistan and Syria,” said Jens Laerke, spokesman for the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA). , during a regular UN press briefing in Geneva.

Since January, 168 aid workers have been attacked, and 44 of them have died, according to “Humanitarian Outcomes”, quoted in the press release published by the UN. Last year, more than 140 aid workers were killed out of more than 460 who were victims of attacks.

“As we mark World Humanitarian Day, we honor all aid workers who often work in dangerous conditions to help those in need, and commemorate those who have lost their lives in the line of duty. duties,” said Martin Griffiths, UN Emergency Relief Coordinator and UN Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs.

The UN estimates that there are 303 million people in crisis worldwide. “Never before have humanitarians been called upon to respond to such a level of need, and they are doing so in ever more dangerous environments,” lamented the OCHA spokesperson.

The UN aims to reach 204 million of the most vulnerable people in the world and, within this framework, its appeals for funds amount to 48.7 billion dollars for the year 2022. At this stage, the financing gap stands at $33.6 billion, the largest funding shortfall ever, warned the international organization.
