The Angolan president is in the process of running for a second term following the victory of the ruling party, the Popular Movement for the Liberation of Angola (MPLA), in the general elections of 24 August.

According to the provisional results communicated Thursday by the National Electoral Commission, based on 97% of the votes with a participation rate of just over 45% of the voters, the MPLA comes first with 51.7% of the votes which entitle it to 124 seats in Parliament.

It is followed by the main opposition party, the National Union for the Total Independence of Angola (UNITA), which won 44.5% of the vote and 90 seats. The rest of the 230 seats that make up Parliament are shared between six other parties.

According to the Angolan electoral system, the candidate of the party or coalition that wins the legislative elections becomes the President of the Republic. Thus, João Lourenço is on the way to continuing his work at the head of the country, with a second mandate.

While waiting for the results to be confirmed, the opposition denounces fraud. UNITA leader Adalberto Costa Junior told a press conference in Luanda that his party “does not recognize the provisional results of the electoral commission” and that “the MPLA did not win the elections”. This official called for the creation of a verification commission.

For all observers, these elections were the tightest in history. The MPLA, which has always ruled the country since its independence in 1975, recorded its first lowest score which will force it to ally with the opposition.
