The African Development Bank (AfDB) Group signed, Monday, September 12, with the Egyptian government, a memorandum of understanding which provides for the holding of its next Annual Meetings in the seaside town of Sharm el-Sheikh, from 22 to 26 May 2023.
This protocol was initialed by the Secretary General of the AfDB, Vincent Nmehielle, and the Acting Governor of the Central Bank of Egypt, Hassan Abdalla, also current Chairman of the Boards of Governors of the Bank Group, in the presence of the ADB Administrator for Egypt and Djibouti, Ahmed Zayed.
It defines what is expected of the host country and marks the official start of the preparations for the event. “The memorandum of understanding that we have just signed reflects our convergence of views on the 2023 Annual Meetings. It also demonstrates our desire, as parties to this agreement, to move forward to successfully organize the meetings. 2023 annual meetings in Sharm el-Sheikh,” said Vincent Nmehielle.
According to him, the choice of this Arab country was made possible thanks, among other things, “to the high quality standards that Egypt has to meet the requirements of hosting the Bank Group’s Annual Meetings”.
For his part, Hassan Abdalla underlined that the hosting by Cairo of this event, the most important of the AfDB, “is part of the Egyptian strategic orientation aimed at promoting African integration and mobilizing the necessary funds available to support African economies, especially in the face of current global challenges”.
These Meetings will bring together the 58th Annual Meeting of the African Development Bank and the 49th Meeting of the African Development Fund, the Group’s concessional window.
Egypt is one of the founding members of the AfDB and one of its largest African shareholders. SG Nmehielle expressed, on behalf of AfDB President Akinwumi Adesina, his sincere appreciation to Egyptian President Abdel Fattah Al Sisi “for his unwavering support and commitment to the African Development Bank Group”.
