The announcement by the authorities of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Friday September 9, relating to the first payment of 65 million dollars from Uganda, executing the decision of the International Court of Justice (ICJ) to Paying Kinshasa $325 million for compensation following the invasion of eastern DRC (1998-2003) has sparked many reactions.

Some observers have praised Kampala’s attitude of honoring the ICJ’s verdict, after a years-long legal battle with the DRC.

The “Justice and Liberation” Group, a Christian association for the defense of human rights active in the DRC, has invited Kinshasa to allow the funds paid to be managed in a collegial and transparent manner.

“Let the representatives of the whole community be involved, so that together we speak the same language, that we find the solution,” he recommended. Otherwise, “if it is a group of people who meet in a private office, in a private office to make the decision”, the association thinks that these people “will do a bad job”.

The ICJ verdict fell last February and Uganda paid the first installment on September 1. Kampala will disburse a total of 5 annual installments of $65 million each.

The 325 million dollars in reparations are distributed as follows: 225 million USD concern the loss of human life, 40 million USD for damage to property and 60 million for the plunder of natural resources.
