Tunisia has announced the forthcoming dispatch of a military battalion of 450 elements to the Central African Republic, at the request of the United Nations, according to a press release from the Tunisian Minister of Defense.

This light infantry battalion of the Tunisian army will join the ranks of the peacekeepers of the United Nations Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in the Central African Republic (MINUSCA), for a renewable period of one year.

The Tunisian soldiers will be tasked with supporting disarmament, demobilization, reintegration and repatriation operations as well as ensuring the protection of civilians, United Nations personnel and humanitarian aid convoys, according to local press. Tunisia had already sent 120 peacekeepers to Tunisia in September 2021.

Minusca has been deployed in the Central African Republic since 2014. But over the years, peacekeepers have become unpopular in this country. Demonstrations against the mission are often organized in the capital Bangui to demand its departure. For many citizens, the Minusca does not fulfill its specifications, including the protection of the population.
