Gabonese opponent Guy Nzouba Ndama was arrested on Saturday in Kabala, in the Haut-Ogooué Province, on the border between Gabon and the Republic of Congo, while he was in possession of three suitcases containing 1.19 billion CFA francs (1.5 million euros).

The announcement was made on Sunday by the deputy public prosecutor at the Franceville court of first instance, Ibinga Ayiquise Bléra, during a press conference.

This former president of the National Assembly who was returning from a brief stay in Congo would not have declared this money and was placed in police custody in Franceville, while the seized funds would have been deposited in the Public Treasury.

“For having refused to declare the said francs, and for not having been able to justify their origin, a report of irregular detention of funds was duly drawn up, and the said funds were confiscated”, informed the deputy of the prosecutor.

Guy Nzouba Ndama was to be presented on Monday to the public prosecutor, after being questioned by the General Directorate of Research (DGR) as part of a preliminary investigation opened by the prosecution.

In the meantime, his party called on “Democratic activists to keep calm, to remain calm and to wait for the official reaction of the party leadership to this information circulating about our president”.

The boss of the “Les Démocrates” party is a former close friend of the late President Omar Bongo. He left the ruling party in 2016 to join the opposition. He would be a potential presidential candidate for 2023.
