The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Chad, Chérif Mahamat Zène, announced on Monday his resignation from the Transitional government, no longer able to tolerate the fact that the exercise of his functions is thwarted “by parallel initiatives” on the part of members of the President’s office and of the government.

“I inform you by this letter of my decision to resign from my functions of Minister of Foreign Affairs which I exercise since May 02, 202, within the transitional government”, he declares in his letter of resignation addressed to the President of the Transition, the head of the junta, Mahamat Idriss Déby Itno.

The now head of diplomacy explains that “for the past few months, my commitment and my desire to serve my country have been thwarted by parallel initiatives by members of your cabinet and the government, undertaken without my knowledge and on your instructions”.

“These repetitive and untimely initiatives and interference are only intended to hinder the exercise of my duties and encroach on the prerogatives which are those of my department”, he believes.

Chérif Mahamat Zène refuses to be reduced to a mere extra within the ministry he leads. “Faced with a situation as unhealthy as it is confused and unacceptable, maintained on purpose, and stripping the department that I lead of all its prerogatives, and reducing me to a simple extra, it does not seem to me either appropriate or responsible to continue to occupy my position. “, he continues in his letter.

This Monday, the Minister of Communication and government spokesman, Abderamane Koulamallah, chaired a meeting with the diplomatic corps in the capital Ndjamena. For several local observers, this initiative would be the straw that broke the camel’s back, pushing the head of diplomacy to throw in the towel.
