The Guinean authorities have decided to bring forward the holding of the presidential election to November 20, the date scheduled for the legislative elections, i.e. five months before the initial deadline, for reasons of cost reduction.
“The presidential, Chamber of Deputies, Senate and municipal elections are called for November 20, 2022,” said a decree from the Head of State read Tuesday, September 20 on state television.
The text underlines the need to consolidate these elections, which are proving to be costly, while the current context is dominated by an economic crisis following the Covid-19 pandemic and, for the past few months, the Russian-Ukrainian crisis. But this argument does not convince the opposition or NGOs, which regularly accuse the regime in power of human rights violations.
Equatoguineans should therefore prepare to elect their deputies and their president within two months, according to the new calendar.
The outgoing Head of State, Teodoro Obiang Nguema Mbasogo, 80, who has already spent 43 years in power, will he again be a candidate for his own succession or, as several observers fear, will he want to pass the hand to his son Teodoro Nguema Obiang Mangue, vice-president of the country nicknamed “Teodorin”? Wait and see.
