Health authorities in Tanzania announced on Wednesday September 28 that they had placed five regions of the country on high risk alert, located near Uganda, which declared an Ebola epidemic a few days ago.
Tanzania intends to intensify its border control and conduct enhanced surveillance given the porous border areas that can carry the virus unnoticed.
The regions are invited to prepare their contingency plans to act promptly and effectively in the event of threats. Medical teams made up of 12 people operate in the 26 regions of the country. Awareness campaigns are carried out in schools.
All these measures are preventive because the country has not recorded any cases so far. Five isolation centers have been set up to treat patients at the first symptoms.
In Uganda, the death toll already stands at 23. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), the Ebola epidemic present in this country has a rare strain for which there is not yet a vaccine. , hence a “high” risk at the national level.
“In the absence of licensed vaccines and therapeutics for the prevention and treatment of Sudan virus disease, the risk of a potential serious public health impact is high,” the WHO said.
The UN body does not rule out a possible spread of the disease to neighboring countries. However, it advises against any travel and/or trade restrictions to Uganda.
