Burkina Faso: After the condemnation of the putsch, the UN calls for the preservation of “peace and stability”

The Secretary General of the United Nations, António Guterres, had “strongly” condemned, Saturday, October 1 in a press release, “any attempt to seize power by force of arms” in Burkina Faso, the day after a second coup d’etat. in eight months in the country.

At the same time, he called on “all actors to refrain from all violence and to seek dialogue”, while expressing “his full support for regional efforts aimed at a rapid return to constitutional order in the country”. .

This Monday, October 3, the United Nations Resident Coordinator in Burkina Faso and Humanitarian Coordinator, Barbara Manzi, stressed the need to preserve “peace and stability” given the insecurity facing the country.

“Burkina Faso needs peace, stability and unity to ensure that people can have access to essential services, protection and means of subsistence,” she pleaded.

And to add, “any attack against civilian populations is strictly prohibited by the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and international humanitarian law. Any action inciting intolerance, violence and hatred is contrary to the spirit of the Charter of the United Nations”.

She called on all actors “to practice tolerance and dialogue and to work for a future of peace, unity, stability and economic and social progress”.

Since last weekend, Burkina has been led by another soldier, in particular Captain Ibrahim Traoré who dismissed Lieutenant-Colonel Paul-Henri Sandaogo Damiba in a coup d’etat, who himself came to power in a late putsch. January. Damiba agreed to pack up to avoid a bloodbath, but under certain conditions accepted by his successor.
