The list of sectors not having the right to strike has been extended in Benin, with the arrival of three newcomers, including transport, airports and hydrocarbons.
Tuesday, October 11, the deputies approved the draft law amending and supplementing law n°2001-09 of June 21, 2002 on the exercise of the right to strike in the Republic of Benin, as amended and supplemented by law n° 2018-34 of October 05, 2018.
The government had adopted this project at the end of September during a Council of Ministers, evoking an “increasingly demanding security context where the defense of the national territory and the exercise of the sovereign functions of the State require that certain sectors of activity are permanently mobilized”. He then transmitted it to the National Assembly for study and vote.
The authorities had taken this initiative four days after the strike of air traffic controllers in Benin which had paralyzed the international airport of Cotonou Cadjehoun. This temporary work stoppage, also followed by several other African countries, was launched by air traffic controllers from the Agency for the Safety of Air Navigation in Africa and Madagascar (Asecna).
It remains that the adopted law is promulgated. It will apply to all companies operating on national territory, “without distinction of nationality or legal status”. Any “violation of the strike ban is punishable by a fine of one to five million FCFA and imprisonment for two to three years”, it is specified.
