The president of the African Peoples’ Party Côte d’Ivoire (PPACI), Laurent Gbagbo, is the undisputed candidate of the PPA-CI for the presidency of 2025, according to the Secretary General of the party, Damana Adia Médard.
This official was speaking on Monday, October 17 on the occasion of the first anniversary of the PPACI. The party organized an extraordinary session of the General Secretariat to, among other things, take stock of its activities, one year after its creation.
“For the presidential election of 2025, our natural candidate is Laurent Gbagbo,” declared Damana Adia Médard. “Laurent Gbagbo has been nominated candidate (…) Because there are no other alternatives (…) This message must pass and be understood by all. We will create, the day after this anniversary, the conditions for a strong and irresistible PPA-CI”, he insisted.
In his speech, he mentioned the local elections (scheduled between October and November 2023) which he considered “a test of magnitude for the presidential elections of 2025”. According to him, the PPA-CI does not intend to “make up the numbers, because it is these (local) elections that open the way to the presidential elections of 2025”.
Gbagbo himself did not communicate on his possible candidacy. However, he allowed himself to lecture African heads of state who want to cling to power, after the number of authorized terms.
“If the Constitution says that you have two terms to do, do them and then go sit down,” he said, making it clear that it is up to the successors to continue the programs started.
“In politics, you don’t finish a program, the programs you design before you come to power, when you put them into practice, their consequences, it’s long, so if you want to wait to finish the consequences, you’ll stay in power all your life and it’s dictatorship,” he explained.
Is his message also addressed to Ivorian President Alassane Ouattara who is in his third term? Without a doubt !
