Russia announced this Wednesday, October 29 its return to the agreement on Ukrainian grain exports, a few days after its decision to suspend its participation in this agreement which had nevertheless allowed the resumption of grain exports blocked in Ukrainian ports due to of the conflict between Moscow and kyiv.
Moscow had justified its withdrawal from the grain agreement by a drone attack near Crimea. The reconsideration of his decision would be due, according to the media, to the fact that he would have received “written guarantees from Ukraine on the demilitarization of the corridor used” for the transport of cereals.
The United Nations, which has been strongly mobilized in favor of Russia’s return to the agreement, welcomed Moscow’s move to reverse its decision, according to the UN website.
UN spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric said in his press statement that UN Secretary-General António Guterres welcomed Russia’s announcement “concerning the resumption of its participation in the implementation of the Black Sea Grain Initiative to facilitate safe navigation for grain, food and fertilizer exports from Ukraine”.
During the Summit of the League of Arab States, held this Tuesday in Algiers (Algeria), the UN SG declared that “this Initiative has been vital (…) for the whole world. Ships have left. Food was distributed. Prices have fallen. This is a crucial action. She must not stop. Because every increase in food prices, no matter how small, pushes more people and communities into poverty and hunger, and in many cases into instability.”
More than 9.7 million tonnes of grain and foodstuffs have been exported from Ukraine under the Black Sea Grain Initiative concluded between Moscow and Kyiv last July under the auspices of Turkey and the UN. Since the beginning of the conflict between Ukraine and Russia, exports of Ukrainian cereals, as well as Russian foodstuffs and fertilizers, have been affected, leading to a considerable increase in prices throughout the world.
