The Chadian Minister of Communication, Aziz Mahamat Saleh, announced on Monday on Twitter that the “Government of Chad accepts an international investigation into the events of October 20”.
On this date, Chadians had taken to the streets, responding to the call of the opposition, to denounce the extension of the transition by two years and the maintenance in power of Mahamat Idriss Déby Itno, two of the many resolutions resulting from the dialogue national inclusive held from August 20 to October 08, 2022.
Officially, fifty people had died while 300 others had been injured. But this assessment is disputed by the opposition and human rights NGOs, which put forward a toll of more than 200 dead and hundreds injured.
An international investigation should shed light on this case. Prime Minister Saleh Kebzabo told AFP that “Chad’s various partners wanted it and we immediately gave our agreement (…) The investigation must be launched as soon as possible. He promised to release further details at an upcoming press conference.
General Mahamat Idriss Déby Itno had seized power by force when his father, Idriss Déby Itno, died at the front by rebels. He had promised an 18-month transition, but the national dialogue decided otherwise to the chagrin of the opposition and the international community.
