The Parliament of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has just officially expressed its indignation at the case of Amy Ndiaye Gniby, a Senegalese deputy who had been attacked in the middle of a parliamentary session on 1 last December in Dakar, by two of his colleagues, notably Massata Samb and Mamadou Niang.

“It is with great consternation and deep indignation that the ECOWAS Parliament has followed the scene of barbaric and despicable violence perpetrated on the Honorable Amy Ndiaye Gniby”, says a statement from this Parliament addressed to the National Assembly of Senegal.

A delegation of ECOWAS parliamentarians traveled to Dakar for the occasion and met the President of the National Assembly, Amadou Mame Diop.

The statement goes on to urge “the Senegalese State, in collaboration with the National Assembly of Senegal, to take the necessary steps to ensure that justice is done for this unfortunate event”.

The ECOWAS Parliament has deemed it “unacceptable” that the incident in the hemicycle took place in the midst of the global campaign of the “16 days of activism against gender-based violence” which begins on November 25, corresponding to the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, to end on December 10, dedicated to International Human Rights Day.

On the ground in Dakar, Mame Diop had seized, on December 2, the public prosecutor, Amady Diouf, who had ordered the arrest of Samb and Niang. These two deputies are members of the opposition coalition Yewwi Askan Wi, while Amy Ndiaye, elected from the Alliance for the Republic (APR), is part of the ruling coalition, Benno Bokk Yakaar (BBY) which has condemned “this aggression of unparalleled gravity”.
