Turkey aims for “equitable and balanced” relations with Africa

Turkish President Erdogan hinted on Wednesday in Ankara, during a working visit by Senegalese President Macky Sall, who is also the current chairman of the African Union, that his country wants to develop economic relations with Africa “in a fair and balanced manner”.

“We are striving to develop our economic relations with Africa in a fair and balanced way,” he said during a joint conference with his Senegalese counterpart. “We will conduct our trade relations on a win-win basis,” continued the Turkish leader.

On the diplomatic level, Erdogan also mentioned Turkey’s interest in the continent, stressing that his country currently has 44 embassies in Africa, while this figure was 12 in 2002. Ankara for its part has 38 African embassies. .

The Turkish president’s last African tour dates back to February 2022. He visited the Democratic Republic of Congo, Senegal and Guinea-Bissau. In October 2021, he had visited Angola, Nigeria and Togo.

From December 16 to 18, 2021, the city of Istanbul hosted the 3rd Turkey-Africa Partnership Summit, organized in collaboration with the African Union.

“I thank my friend and brother President Erdogan for his friendly welcome on December 21 and our discussion on several subjects of common interest. I am delighted with his support for the candidacy of the African Union as a member of the G20”, wrote Macky Sall on Twitter.
