The Somali army eliminated at least 136 members of the terrorist movement Al-Shabaab, including 3 military commanders, during an offensive which took place in the region of Lower Shabelle, in southern Somalia, informed the vice -Somali Information Minister Abdul Rahman Yusuf in a statement during a press conference on Sunday.
“The Somali army, in cooperation with Somali intelligence services and international allies, carried out a military operation which targeted a densely forested area in the Lower Shabelle region of southwestern Somalia,” he said. he said, adding that the first report shows 136 Al-Shabaab members killed and 89 injured.
Among the Shabaab fighters killed are three officials, including Salman Tiri, who was in charge of coastal operations, Muallem Selhi, in charge of military operations in several cities, and Muallem Hashi, in charge of the fronts in the Lower region. Shabelle (south).
According to the minister, Shabaab militants were preparing to carry out terrorist attacks against military and government sites in the region. Also, the army offensive would still be ongoing, he said.
As a reminder, Somali President Hassan Cheikh Mohamoud declared, in June 2022, a “total and relentless war” against the terrorist movement. As the weeks go by, the government announces new exploits in its fight against terrorism, supported by the American army.
The jihadist group Al-Shabaab, which pledged allegiance to Al Qaeda in 2009, has been fighting the federal government and waging an insurgency since 2006. Its numerous terrorist attacks have left hundreds dead.
