The government is trying to reassure the population, angry at the meteoric rise in food prices, by explaining that the measures taken are likely to allow a gradual return to normal prices in the coming weeks.
During a Council of Government held on Thursday February 9, Prime Minister Aziz Akhannouch hinted that “prices will start falling again in the coming weeks”, recalling “the royal instructions” which “stress the need to protect the purchasing power of citizens, by ensuring, in particular, that national markets are well supplied with food products”.
“I would like to reassure public opinion regarding the return to normal of vegetable prices, led by tomatoes, onions and potatoes”, he declared, stressing that “the rise in the price of tomatoes is essentially linked to the “cold snap” that is raging in the country.
Production has remained at good levels and new agricultural cycles are ready to start to guarantee supply and meet consumption needs, which will affect prices,” Akhannouch added.
The prices of red meat should also experience a fall, according to the head of government, thanks, he indicates, “to the measures that we have taken, in particular the abolition of the value added tax and the cessation of the collection customs duties on the import of cattle intended for slaughter, because these measures will allow professionals to import approximately 30,000 heads intended for slaughter, before the advent of the holy month of Ramadan”.
Akhannouch also mentioned the support measures granted to transporters, which should contribute to the stability of food prices in the coming weeks.
The head of government invited the ministers to mobilize the various departments to strengthen market control in terms of supply and prices, knowing that the perpetrators of the offenses will be punished.
