A delegation from the United Nations Security Council is on a working visit to the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) from March 9 to 12 to assess the security situation in the east of this country, as well as the implementation of the mandate of the UN Mission in the DRC (Monusco).
The mission, led by the representative of France to the UN, Nicolas de Rivière, is expected to meet President Felix Tshisekedi, Prime Minister Sama Lukonde, members of the government, the presidents of the National Assembly and the Senate, the actors politicians, representatives of civil society, the diplomatic community, MONUSCO and the United Nations system in the DRC.
The DRC is the scene of renewed violence in its eastern part, where the Congolese armed forces clash with the rebels of the M23, a movement supported, according to Kinshasa, by Rwanda. A ceasefire, scheduled to begin on March 7, could not be observed and the two parties accuse each other.
The visit of the Security Council delegation “takes place in a difficult context, since armed groups are active in eastern DRC causing serious damage, thousands of people are suffering, there is an unprecedented humanitarian crisis more a looting of natural resources”, admitted Nicolas de Rivière to the press.
In his words, “the council came to bring a fairly clear message. We will look at what the United Nations can do. It is important to act, that the armed groups cease their activities, that everyone participates in the political process, that the foreign groups withdraw, that the armed groups supported by the foreigner also withdraw”.
The delegation also planned to go to Goma to assess the security and humanitarian situation in North Kivu Province (East), and to assess the operational context in which Monusco operates.
As the DRC prepares for general elections, due to be held at the end of this year, the Security Council mission stressed that its “message will be to encourage political actors to engage in a process of transparent elections and credible”.
