A preliminary report by South Africa’s anti-corruption watchdog, leaked to the press on Saturday March 11, cleared President Cyril Ramaphosa of the $580,000 theft in 2020. on his farm in Phala Phala, in the province of Limpopo (North).
The report takes into consideration the fact that the president declared the incident theft within weeks of the theft, and argues that the head of state did not violate any code of ethics and did not abuse his role as head of the country.
On the other hand, the document deplores that the head of the presidential protection unit, to whom the head of state had reported the theft, acted inappropriately, investigating the case directly instead of reporting it to the police.
“We take note of the report. As previously stated, we reiterate that the President has not participated in any wrongdoing and has not violated the oath he took upon taking office,” the spokesperson said on Saturday. word of Ramaphosa, Vincent Magwenya, confirming receipt of the report by the President.
“I took note of the report, that’s all I can say. Once the preliminary report has been published, the less said, the better, because it has yet to publish the final report,” said the president, who declined to comment on the document.
While when he came to power Ramaphosa had promised to eradicate corruption, this affair, willy-nilly, tarnished his image. A police investigation is still ongoing.
