Tunisian authorities on Monday (April 17th) arrested the leader of the Islamo-conservative Ennahdha movement, Rached Ghannouchi, angering his supporters.
The 81-year-old former Speaker of Parliament, one of the main opponents of President Kaïs Saïed, was arrested at his home by police, according to a press release from Ennahdha which called for his “immediate release”. He was reportedly arrested for his statements.
Speaking at a press conference, Ennahdha vice-president Mondher Lounissi claimed that Rached Ghannouchi had been taken to a police barracks for questioning and that his lawyers had not been allowed to go there. to assist.
The party offices would also have been closed this Tuesday, April 18 throughout the national territory, by the police.
The wave of arrests of opponents and representatives of civil society continues, despite multiple denunciations, not only from local but also international NGOs. Since February, around twenty personalities have been imprisoned, including media officials, ex-ministers and businessmen.
Kais Saied has been accused of authoritarian drift since July 2021, when he dissolved the activities of Parliament and dismissed the then Prime Minister.
