Senegalese President Macky Sall has put an end, by decree, to the functions of Idrissa Seck at the head of the Economic, Social and Environmental Council (CESE), according to a press release published Monday April 24 by the Secretary General of the Presidency of the Republic, Oumar Samba Ba.
Presumably, the head of state only acted on the decision of his now ex-ally Seck. Indeed, the latter announced, Saturday, April 22 during a press conference in Thiès (west), that he was to submit to President Sall, this Monday, his letter of resignation from the presidency of the ESEC.
On the same occasion, former Prime Minister Seck, who has already announced his candidacy for the presidential election of February 2024, formalized the break with the Benno Bokk Yakaar coalition, in power, by withdrawing his political formation, Remi.
After losing the presidential election in 2019, coming second after Sall, Seck left the opposition to join the presidential coalition in 2020. This is how he was appointed head of the CESE and two ministerial posts were entrusted to his side.
Moreover, by another decree, the Head of State also terminated the functions of the two ministers of Rewmi who were in charge of Sports and Livestock.
Like several opponents, Seck warns against a possible third term for Sall, which would be unconstitutional. Note that former Prime Minister Aminata Touré had already distanced herself from the Head of State for the same reason.
The outgoing president has not yet clearly decided on his candidacy, promising to do so “when the time comes”.
