The Director-General of the World Health Organization (WHO), Dr Tedros Adhanom Gebreyesus, indicated on Friday May 5 that Covid-19 is now an established and permanent health problem that no longer constitutes a health emergency. of international concern, informed the Office of the Spokesperson of the Secretary-General of the United Nations in its press briefing of the day.
This announcement was made after a meeting of the International Health Regulations Emergency Committee regarding the pandemic, during which members highlighted the downward trend in Covid-19 related deaths, declines in hospitalizations and admissions in the intensive care unit related to the disease, and the high levels of population immunity to SARS-CoV-2.
The Emergency Committee deemed it appropriate to move to a long-term management of the Covid-19 pandemic, while recognizing the uncertainties inherent in the potential evolution of SARS-CoV-2.
WHO draws attention to the fact that the end of Covid-19 as a public health emergency of international concern does not mean that this virus is no longer a threat to global health. The disease continues to kill, thousands of people around the world continue to fight for their lives in intensive care.
The UN body therefore recommends that all States Parties integrate vaccination against Covid-19 into lifelong vaccination programs and continue to support research to improve vaccines that reduce transmission.
