Professional press organizations in Guinea took action this Monday, May 22, to denounce measures to which certain media have been subjected in recent days by the authorities.
At the end of an Extraordinary General Assembly, they decided, first, to “declare from this Monday, May 22, 2023, Minister Ousmane Gaoual Diallo, Minister of Posts and Telecommunications, spokesman for the government enemy of the Guinean press”.
The latter declared, on May 18, that “any media, whether radio, television or an Internet site which, with remarks which are likely to undermine national unity, to stir up community hatred, to raise against each other to lead to dramas in our country, we will not hesitate to close the media and to assume all the responsibilities”.
Other actions relate to the boycott of all activities of the government and other organs of the Transition until the lifting of all government restrictions; as well as the National Week of Information and Communication Professions (SENAMIC).
This Tuesday, May 23, the media observed a “Day without press” which is another measure taken out of the extraordinary GA.
Professional press associations are also planning a protest march on Thursday, June 1, 2023 throughout the national territory.
While the government has had, in recent days, to dismantle transmitters from the AfricVision press group, jam the airwaves of certain radios, impose restrictions on internet browsing, the organizations demand the restoration of the normal situation at the risk of undertaking more vigorous actions.
