Sahara file: Ukraine supports the autonomy plan presented by Morocco

Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba, visiting Morocco, expressed on Monday his country’s support for the Autonomy Plan, presented by Morocco in 2007, as a serious and credible basis for the successful settlement of the Sahara issue. , according to a press release published on the Moroccan diplomacy website.

Kuleba said this during a joint press briefing with his Moroccan counterpart, Nasser Bourita, after their meeting.

Ukraine and Morocco both know the value of sovereignty and territorial integrity, he continued, adding that resolving the Sahara issue is essential for regional security and peace.

The Head of Ukrainian diplomacy also indicated that Ukraine supports the efforts of the Personal Envoy of the United Nations Secretary General for the Sahara, Staffan de Mistura, aimed at finding a realistic, lasting and mutually acceptable political solution, in accordance with the United Nations Security Council resolutions.

Kuleba stopped over in the Kingdom as part of an African tour. He said he made the deliberate choice to visit Morocco first, given the good relations between the two countries.

“We covered a wide range of bilateral and regional issues, especially from Africa,” he also reported, stressing that Kyiv is “aware of Morocco’s potential as a gateway to the African continent.”

In his statements, Bourita, among other things, addressed the conflict between Russia and Ukraine, declaring that Morocco does not participate in this conflict in any way whatsoever, and reaffirming “Morocco’s constant position on respect territorial integrity and sovereignty of countries”.

According to him, the Kingdom has been committed since the beginning of the crisis in Ukraine to giving priority to respect for legality and international law and the non-use of force for the settlement of conflicts, as well as the encouragement of dialogue and compliance with relevant UN resolutions.

“Morocco is affected by this war because, firstly, it harms regional security and stability, and secondly because of its economic repercussions and consequences on many countries, including the Kingdom,” he explained.
