Mali, through its Minister of Foreign Affairs, asked the Security Council on Friday June 16 to withdraw “without delay” the UN Mission in Mali (MINUSMA) “whose mandate is no longer height of the country’s security challenges”.

MINUSMA “seems to have become part of the problem by fueling inter-community tensions exacerbated by extremely serious allegations that are extremely detrimental to peace, reconciliation and national cohesion”, he said.

Reacting to this request in a press release, Burkina Faso, welcoming “this courageous decision formulated by the Malian authorities of transition before the Security Council” asked Sunday, in turn, the UN, to withdraw its troops deployed in Mali .

Ouagadougou “congratulates Mali for this assumed choice, which is in line with the strategic vision of the Malian State in the fight against terrorism and for the restoration of peace and security in the Sahel. It encourages the Government and the brotherly people of Mali in this affirmation of the sovereignty of the Malian State and the expression of the will of Malians and Malians to be the sole masters of their destiny”, according to the press release.

Similarly, the Government of Burkina Faso “invites the international community to strictly respect the choices made by Mali”, while asking the Secretary General of the United Nations “to kindly take the necessary measures for the withdrawal of the Burkinabe troops engaged in Mali in the framework of MINUSMA”.

Burkina, moreover, reaffirms “its solidarity with the Government of Mali and all the peoples of the Sahel in the fight against terrorism and remains faithful to the ideal of building, in complete independence and in complete responsibility, a world of peace, security and shared development for all Sahelians”.

The head of MINUSMA, El-Ghassim Wane, on the other hand, defended, before the Security Council, his Mission which would have endeavored to implement its mandate “in the most effective way possible”. Regarding Mali’s request, he told the press that “we are guided by the decision that the Council may take”.
