Zambian police announced in a statement this week the arrest of Daliso Lungu, a 36-year-old businessman, on suspicion of possessing property believed to be the proceeds of crime.
This son of former President Edgar Lungu was arrested with his wife, Matildah Milinga, with whom they are directors of a company called Saloid Traders Limited
This company had 48 vehicles estimated to be worth approximately $1.34 million and fixed assets valued at approximately $704,000. The catch is that these assets are suspected to be proceeds of crime, according to the statement.
“Daliso Lungu was arrested and charged with possession of property suspected to be proceeds of crime, due to the possession of 21 motor vehicles (…) and fixed assets (…), all registered in his name”, explains the document signed by the spokesperson for the floor, Rae Hamoonga.
The same source claims that the former president’s son was also arrested and charged with money laundering, in a case where he allegedly laundered nearly $1.3 million. According to the police, this money was deposited in the account of Saloid Traders Limited domiciled at the Zambia National Commercial Bank.
Daliso and his wife, however, were granted bail and are expected to appear in court soon.
It should be noted that about a week before Daliso Lungu’s arrest, the security forces had seized the properties of the former President Lungu’s wife, Esther, and his daughter Tasila, suspected of having been acquired illegally.
Supporters of Edgar Lungu denounce a witch hunt, while the ruling regime defends the application of the law.
