The UN Mission in Mali (Minusma) was the victim of two attacks perpetrated on Thursday July 6 in the Gao region, in the north of this West African country, some six months before the withdrawal of this Mission.
“A Minusma logistics convoy was targeted by 2 separate attacks in the circle of Ansongo. The 1st attack caused 3 dead and 11 injured civilians, including 2 seriously, evacuated by our rescue unit. The blue helmets responded to the 2 attacks without recording any losses, ”explains the Mission in a brief press release published on Twitter on Friday.
These attacks were carried out by suspected jihadists, but they have not yet been claimed.
The incidents came about a week after the decision of the United Nations Council to end the mandate of Minusma as of June 30, 2023, in response to the request of the transitional government of Mali to withdraw Minusma without delay.
Moreover, the Mission presented, on July 3, its withdrawal plan to the Malian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, informs the Mission in a press release. The meeting between the two parties, held at the request of Minusma, made it possible to discuss an orderly and safe withdrawal of the Mission on December 31, 2023, and to agree on the need for enhanced cooperation and coordination. , in order to ensure the completion of the withdrawal process within the stipulated time.
Minusma was created by the Security Council in April 2013 through its resolution 2100, in order to support the political process in Mali and help the country restore peace and stability. It is the deadliest mission of all UN peacekeeping missions, with the death of 174 members of its personnel, killed almost in ten years.
