The new Nigerian head of state, Bola Tinubu, was elected current president of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), this Sunday July 9 at the end of the 63ᵉ session of the conference of Heads of State held in Bissau, capital of Guinea-Bissau.
His peers chose him to replace Bissau-Guinean President Umaro Sissoco Embalo for a one-year term.
The ordinary session of ECOWAS was, among other things, focused on the ongoing transitions in Mali, Burkina Faso and Guinea, three countries that have experienced coups in recent years and are ruled by military juntas.
The new incumbent president has already set the tone in his speech after his appointment, hammering that “we will not allow coup after coup in West Africa”.
The President of the ECOWAS Commission, Omar Alieu Touray, called on the three countries to respect the agreed deadlines for the return to constitutional order and the handing over of power to civilians. “In the event that the time allotted for the transition fails, major sanctions may fall,” he warned.
