The United States has provided $3 million through the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) Humanitarian Assistance Office to support populations in northern Togo affected by the violence and travel from the Sahel, informs an official press release.
Insecurity along Togo’s northern border has displaced tens of thousands of people at a time when more than 460,000 individuals need an emergency nutritional solution to meet their basic needs, the document points out.
With this immediate humanitarian contribution, USAID partners will provide lifesaving assistance to newly displaced people and vulnerable members of the host community.
These are the World Food Program (WFP) and Catholic Relief Services (CRS) who work closely with the government of Togo. This funding will allow CRS, in collaboration with the Diocese of Dapaong City, to provide multi-purpose financial assistance to approximately 27,000 people to cover their basic needs.
As for WFP, which for years has been a leading actor in northern Togo, the funding will help provide an additional 37,000 people with an emergency nutrition response for three months. Vulnerable populations will be assisted during the lean season, when families generally need the most assistance.
To ensure the long-term resilience of communities, WFP will also help families develop income-generating activities.
The United States will stand with the Togolese people during this particularly difficult time, the statement concluded.
