The First Lady of Burundi, Angeline Ndayishimiye received the UN Population Prize 2023, Wednesday in New York, alongside the African Institute for Development Policy (AFITEP).

In a press release, the UN population agency (UNFPA) indicates that “the winners of the United Nations Population Prize 2023 are Ms. Angeline Ndayishimiye (…) in the individual category and the African Institute for Development (AFIDEP) in the institutional category”.

The UN body recognizes several actions to the credit of the first lady. “Among the many causes she supports, she is deeply committed to championing education for the nation’s youth, addressing the causes and consequences of gender-based violence, and supporting those facing stigmatized and unhealthy health issues. served, such as obstetric fistula,” the document states.

“She has developed countless practical solutions to these challenges, including the creation of a psychiatric center to support survivors of violence and numerous projects that provide sexual and reproductive health information to marginalized communities across the Republic. of Burundi”, continues the text.

The award, given annually to an individual and/or institution in recognition of outstanding contributions to population and reproductive health issues and solutions, includes a gold medal, diploma, and cash.
