The South African presidency announced on Wednesday that Russian President Vladimir Putin will not attend the BRICS (South Africa, Brazil, China, India and Russia) summit to be held in Johannesburg at the end of August.
This decision would be the result of a number of consultations undertaken by the South African leader and would be taken by mutual agreement. Russia, on the other hand, will be represented by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Sergei Lavrov.
On the Moscow side, it is indicated that in addition to the presence of the head of Russian diplomacy at the summit, President Putin “will take part in it by videoconference” and “it will be a full participation”.
These different resolutions should appease Pretoria, which was called upon to arrest Putin in case he set foot on South African territory. The Russian leader is targeted by an arrest warrant from the International Criminal Court for “war crime of deportation of Ukrainian children”, and South Africa, as a member of the ICC, is theoretically supposed to arrest him.
