The President of the Republic of Congo, Denis Sassou-N’Guesso, also Chairman of the African Union (AU) High Level Committee for Libya, on Thursday 20 July invited the Libyans to deepen the constructive dialogue, in for the restoration of peace in their country, this Thursday, July 20, on the occasion of the opening of the first meeting of the preparatory commission for the inter-Libyan reconciliation conference.
“In view of the higher interests of Libya, I urge you to deepen the constructive dialogue, here in Brazzaville, through free expression, during your exchanges, with tolerance and responsibility”, he declared, according to an official Congolese communiqué.
The same source stresses that the chairman of the committee has always favored the path of dialogue, for the settlement of the Libyan crisis. “Since the beginning of the crisis, we have never believed in a military solution and do not believe in it any more today”, he argued, adding that “the unwavering commitment to a political and peaceful outcome of this crisis has always been the major postulate of the African approach to the restoration of peace” in Libya.
Maintaining that the course for the organization of the presidential and legislative elections must be maintained and internalized by all, Sassou-N’Guesso indicates that these electoral deadlines constitute for the Libyan people the anchor point for the return to peace and freedom; while insisting that, to guarantee the acceptance of the results of the said polls by all the actors, the AU has always called for inclusive, consensual, transparent, credible and exemplary elections.
“It is the price of post-electoral stability that will allow Libya to have a single and stable government, to have a prosperous economy and to open up new prospects for its future”, affirmed the Congolese leader.
He also urged to work “for a peaceful and stable Libya; Both sides must, unconditionally, renounce the stubborn search for leadership and systematically place the general interest above individual calculations in order to move forward on the path of Libyan renewal, curb resentment and banish exclusions and rejection of division and separatism, favoring the strength of forgiveness and tolerance”.
Libya has descended into a major political crisis since the fall of Muammar Gaddafi’s regime in 2011.
