The reactions are already multiplying following the initiative of the soldiers of the presidential guard in Niger to ban, very early this Monday, July 26, access to the palace of the presidency in Niamey the capital.
In a press release, the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) “condemns in the strongest terms the attempt to seize power by force” in Niger, calling on “the putschists to immediately and unconditionally release the democratically elected President of the Republic”.

For its part, the African Union (AU) also condemned the “coup attempt” in Niger and called for the “immediate and unconditional return of the felon soldiers to their barracks”.
In a press release, the chairman of the AU commission, Moussa Faki Mahamat, denounced “firmly such acts on the part of soldiers acting in total betrayal of their republican duty”. He urged them “to immediately stop” this “unacceptable enterprise”.
On the European side, the High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Joseph Borell, “very concerned about the current events in Niamey”, condemned “any attempt to destabilize democracy and to threaten the stability of Niger”.
Talks are said to be still underway between the various parties concerned, for the release of the president. To be continued !
