The party “African Patriots of Senegal for work, ethics and fraternity” (Pastef) announced on Sunday August 6 the hospitalization of its leader, Ousmane Sonko, who has been detained since the end of July and has started a hunger strike on July 30.

“Pastef-Les Patriotes has just learned that President Ousmane Sonko, in arbitrary detention since July 31, 2023 at Sebikhotane prison, is admitted to the emergency room”, indicates his press release published on Facebook.

The document goes on to state that “prior to his imprisonment, he was in good health and suffered from no known illness”. As a reminder, Ousmane had just been imprisoned for, among other things, calling for insurrection and undermining state security; while at the beginning of June he was sentenced to two years in prison for a sex scandal.

The Pastef holds the president “Macky Sall and his regime entirely responsible for everything that will happen to him” and “remains attentive to the attending physicians”.

The Sonko formation was dissolved on July 31 by the authorities for having called for insurrectionary movements. However, a few days before, the formation had nominated Sonko, 49, as its presidential candidate for February 2024.

The standoff between the opponent and the regime in power is still far from subsiding. Fears remain visible about other possible uprisings by the population.
