The Special Representative of the UN Secretary General for Sudan and Head of the United Nations Integrated Mission for Transition Assistance in Sudan (UNAMIS), the German Volker Perthes, announced on Wednesday during an intervention at Security Council, having tendered his resignation.

“I thank the Secretary General for this opportunity and for the trust he has placed in me, but I asked him to relieve me of this function,” he indicated without giving reasons for this departure.

The head of the UN, Antonio Guterres, is said to have accepted this resignation, believing that Perthes “had good reasons to resign” and that his wishes should be respected.

It should be noted that the UN envoy had become undesirable in Sudan where the Sudanese army demanded his dismissal and considered him persona non grata on the national territory.

During his speech to the Security Council, Perthes delivered his latest report in which he called for the conflict in Sudan to be resolved as quickly as possible, “before it turns into a full-blown civil war.”

The senior official reported a worsening of violence in Darfur and the west of the country, but also in Southern Kordofan and Blue Nile, scenes of clashes between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the People’s Liberation Movement. Sudan-North (SPLM-N). Faced with these various sources of tension, he warned of a risk of “fragmentation” of Sudan.

The envoy called on the UN and its international partners to continue to put pressure on the conflicting parties for a ceasefire, as fighting between the two sides entered its sixth month.

According to his remarks, since the start of the conflict on April 15, the toll has risen to at least 5,000 killed and more than 12,000 injured, while recognizing that the real figures are “probably higher”.
