AU condemns attempted coup in DRC

The Chairman of the African Union Commission, Moussa Faki Mahamat, said he had “followed with deep concern the events in Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC)”, this Sunday, May 19.
In his statement, he “strongly condemns this coup attempt and welcomes the control of the situation announced by the country’s defense and securitý forces”.
Furthermore, it is pleased that all the leaders of the republican institutions are safe and sound” and “takes this opportunity to condemn any use of force to change the constitutional order in any African state whatsoever”.
On Sunday, gunmen stormed the Palais de la Nation, the office of President Félix Tshisekedi, as well as the residence of Vital Kamerhe, a member of the ruling Sacred Union and candidate for the presidency of the National Assembly.
According to Congolese army spokesman Brigadier General Sylvain Ekenge, the coup attempt involved both Congolese and foreigners, including three US nationals.
The coup commando, Christian Malanga, a naturalized American Congolese, was killed.
The US ambassador to the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Lucy Tamlyn, said on her X account that “I am shocked by this morning’s events and very concerned by reports of US citizens allegedly involved.
