The President of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Commission, Omar Alieu Touray, has called for unity as a means of combating insecurity, in his message published to mark the 49th anniversary of the creation of ECOWAS. “As we celebrate our 49th anniversary, insecurity continues to threaten our region. Some of our member states are fighting terrorist groups on a daily basis, and a large part of our population faces displacement and food insecurity”, the official began. “It is our duty to remain united if we aspire to victory in the fight against insecurity. But it is our very unity that is now threatened. We must do all we can to preserve our unity”, he continued. Touray pointed out that the theme chosen for the 49th anniversary celebrations was “Strengthening regional unity, peace and security”. The choice of this theme is intended, in his words, “to reflect our current challenges, and also to remind us all of the need to work towards preserving regional unity and peace, two cherished objectives set by the founding fathers of ECOWAS”. These are objectives that the Heads of State and Government strive to safeguard every day, through their efforts to ensure the security of our populations and guarantee the integrity of our territories,” he added. The President of the Commission, who also recognized the positive achievements of the Community and the possibility of achieving the objectives of the organization’s Vision 2050, took “this opportunity to thank the leaders, past and present, the members of the Community as well as the staff of all ECOWAS institutions and agencies, for the sacrifices they constantly make on a daily basis to promote the objectives” of the Community. He also expressed his gratitude to all local and international partners for their constant support to ECOWAS in the implementation of various community projects and programs. “We remain convinced that it is in unity that we will succeed in preserving peace and strengthening our actions for the security of our member states and peoples.
