Gabon: Ali Bongo eyeing a third term
Gabonese President Ali Bongo promised, Saturday, March 12 in Libreville, to members of his party, the Gabonese Democratic Party (PDG), that he will be there for the next presidential election in 2023 and will win “a clear victory “.
“Dear comrades, 2023 is fast approaching. I will be there with you. For you. The only way out will be victory. A frank, clear, indisputable victory”, he declared in front of hundreds of party members gathered at a meeting to celebrate the 54th anniversary of the CEO. Bongo, 63, enjoying the revised Constitution of 2017 which allows him to represent himself indefinitely, brandishes the need to “complete” the “work started”.
The president says he is totally cured of the stroke that occurred in 2018 while he was on an official visit to Riyadh (Saudi Arabia). “I (…) went through a terrible ordeal. Today I have completely and definitively overcome it, ”he said while thanking the CEO for his support.
Gabon had escaped a coup in 2019 while the head of state was recovering abroad. A dozen soldiers from the Republican Guard had called for the uprising to “save the country from chaos”.
For their part, personalities from the opposition, from the trade union world and from civil society had demanded, for a long time, that the Head of State submit to a medical expertise to find out if he can still exercise his functions, a few months after his stroke and his return to Gabon.
It is now history. Bongo says he is in great shape to continue leading his country. All that remains is to formalize your candidacy at the time reserved for this stage.
